Preface of the Sarpaneva book (written in 1985):
"Years of intensive work bear fruit in this account of the vast output of the world-famous Finnish artist-designer Timo Sarpaneva.
Sarpaneva´s creativity has never known any bounds. It embraces glass sculpture, painting, graphics, art and household glass, ceramics, porcelain, cast iron, stainless steel, silver, textiles, ryijy rugs, light fittings, books, stage sets and exhibition architecture.
Sarpaneva´s artistically and technically superb achievements have often developed out of new production techniques that he himself invented. These too are covered here.
This work is part of the history of the Finnish arts, industrial design and industry. It is also a Sarpaneva-designed object itself, a dazzling and complex visual diary wich takes the reader on a thrilling explorations of the forces behind great artist´s output. They include the personal yet universal feelings and experiences that have crystallized to give birth to his timeless art.
Sarpaneva designed the book´s visual form (photographic direction, lay-out and typography) in association with artist Marjatta Svennevig.
The text is by Kaj Kalin, art and culture critic, lecturer at the Finnish Museum of Applied Arts and lecturer in art history at the Finnish Fine Arts Academy School."
